Frequency variators (drives) are power electronic solutions for controlling a variable-speed motor that runs on an alternating current (AC); the drives are fed from an AC source.

Gamesa Electric boasts a wide selection of frequency variators and power converters designed for various uses, available in both low and medium voltage (up to 3.3 kV). The solutions for a higher voltage level are custom developed according to the specifications of the customer.

Gamesa Electric drives can control both squirrel cage asynchronous motors and synchronous motors, with wound rotors and permanent magnets.

These products incorporate cutting edge advances for wind generators, as well as for marine propulsion motors, achieving a very precise control of velocity by means of a high quality current controlled on both the motor side and the grid side. Furthermore, Gamesa Electric's electric converters include the latest technology in the development of two level and multilevel systems.

Gamesa Electric's portfolio of converters includes doubly-fed and full conversion machines.

The converters can be unidirectional (from the grid to the load or from the generator to the grid), or bidirectional with active front (AFE, Active Front End) which isolates the facility's different mechanical components from possible distortions in the grid. This guarantees total control over the motor and generator, ensuring compliance with the requirements of the grid connection.

Gamesa Electric's converters use the modularity concept, which ensures flexibility whilst adapting to any power and a high system availability, allowing them to operate continually at a reduced power if a fault occurs in any of the modules. As such, their design means that they obtain the maximum power density using, for example, latest generation IGBTs and liquid cooling
Additionaly to power converter and drives, Gamesa Electric offers a complete range of motors for industrial applications, custom-designed for each client, with the following characteristics:
